email marketingAWeber was founded in 1998.  It is essentially an email marketing platform that automates many of the tasks associated with email marketing.  Some of the things that AWeber can do include:

  • Automate email address collection through forms on your website
  • Create automated responses through AWeber’s autoresponder
  • Create and schedule broadcasts to your email list
  • Create and schedule follow-ups
  • Keep your list up-to-date with new subscribers and unsubscribers
  • Track important metrics and analytics
  • Conduct split tests (send different versions of an email to different subscribers to see which version gets the best response)

Pros and Cons

  • Easy to get started and use
  • Widely used, so your users should be familiar with it; familiarity builds trust
  • Capable of adding videos to emails
  • Mobile apps available
  • Good balance between capability and ease of use
  • “Campaigns” function automates many tasks
  • Free trial so you can test drive the system

  • Can be more expensive than other autoresponders below 2,500 subscribers
  • May be more than very small businesses need

Who is AWeber For?

AWeber is for anyone looking to build an email list for online marketing.

I used to think that it was best to wait until you had a significant number of visitors to your website before using an AWeber.  My thinking was it was hard to justify the cost of AWeber with just a few visitors to your site.  I have since re-evaluated that.  I now think that, if you can afford the cost, and it is not that much, the sooner you can start collecting emails, the better.

Note: If you do not have a website, you can learn to build one in less than a minute here.

Tools and Training

AWeber video libraryAWeber has one of the best training platforms out there.  There are a number of how-to videos and tutorial on the site, and you can even sign up for their free email course.   There are webinars and marketing guides as well as a blog.  With all the available resources, even beginner email marketers should be able to get up and running with no problems.

Some of the videos on the site include:

  • Getting Started
  • Adding a Form to Your Site
  • Importing your List
  • How to Use Social Media to Build Your List
  • Subscriber Management

… and many more!

If you cannot find what you are looking for in all the training material, you can contact support in a number of different ways.

  • Email
  • Text chat
  • Phone

Text chat and phone support are great if you want instant help, but email support is relatively quick, with most responses sent within 24 hours.

There are a number of price points for an AWeber membership.

  • $19/month – Up to 500 subscribers
  • $29/month – 501 – 2,500 subscribers
  • $49/month – 2,501 – 5,000 subscribers
  • $69/month – 5,001 – 10,000 subscribers
  • $149/month – 10,001 – 25,000 subscribers

If you have over 25,000 subscribers, you will need to contact AWeber and get a quote.

AWeber was the first autoresponder on the market, and they have remained a leader in the industry.  They provide a powerful, easy to use platform for managing your email campaigns.  Though they tend to be a little pricey for businesses just starting out and may provide more functionality than such businesses would need, they are one of the best autoresponders out there.  Face it: AWeber email marketing is email marketing the easy way, and I highly recommend AWeber for anyone serious about email marketing.

  1. Hi Andy, I have been considering getting an autoresponder to build a list for my website. I was looking into Aweber for it as it appears to be the one that most internet marketers seem to use, but other than that I do not know much about it. Thank you for your in-depth review, it has clarified a few things for me. But as you said, I need traffic first so I had better go and work on that first.

    Thanks again for sharing

    1. Hi, Jo. I think it is a good idea to work on increasing traffic to your site before incorporating an email marketing campaign. While in theory you can add an autoresponder on day one of your site going live, you will be paying for it on a monthly basis with a very small (initially) list, so it’s better to wait until you start seeing traffic increase.

  2. Aweber is such and awesome system that can make life so easy, arranging everything for you. I really am seeing the full benefits of direct mailing and how this can put and keep you ahead of the game, you have done a great job with this post. thanks for sharing all the best to you.

    1. Thanks, Norman. I agree that AWeber is an awesome product. It is definitely a great time saver. I have used it in the past and have plans to incorporate it here, so stay tuned. 🙂
