Most people find websites by searching for things.  They enter words and phrases into a search engine, like Google, and the search engine returns a bunch of results.  The phrases they enter are called keywords.

So getting traffic to your website is really very simple.  You just figure out which keywords everyone is searching for and make sure you include those keywords on your website.  Unfortunately, that is easier said than done.

How to Find Keyword Ideas

There is a systematic way to find good keywords to use on your website.  The best way to illustrate this method is to use an example.

Let’s say you have a website that focuses on relationships, and you want to create a post covering online dating.

Step 1: Find some good general keywords using Google, Yahoo! Answers, or eHow.  For this example, we are going to use Google.  When you enter a keyword into Google, Google Quick Answer instantly shows the most searched keywords related to your keyword.  In this case, we are looking for keywords related to online dating, so we enter “online dating” into Google.

You can see we just discovered three keyword ideas.

  1. online dating apps
  2. online dating site
  3. online dating scams

Step 2: Enter each of the keywords you got into a keyword optimization tool. There are a number of keyword optimization tools available.  I use Jaaxy.  It is one of the best of it’s kind out there, and there are several price options for using it, including a free option.

  1. Hi Andy, this is super helpful! I’m just starting a blog and looking to get most of my traffic from the Google search engine and I think keywords are the best way for me to do that.

Quick question: once I’ve found the best keywords for my website, how do you use them in your blog post? I’ve heard lots of people warning against keyword stuffing and how you can get penalised by Google. Is there a best practice? Many thanks

    1. Thanks for the comment, Simon.

You are correct that keyword stuffing will hurt your rankings. Posts that were just a bunch of keywords strung together used to do well, but that was a long time ago. Google has gotten much more sophisticated.

What I usually try to do is include one of the best keywords as the title of my post and then try to scatter a few of them throughout the post. I also try to include keywords in the section headlines, but only if it fits well. The most important thing is to make your post readable to your visitors. That is what will earn you traffic in the long run.

  2. Thanks for your review on Jaaxy.

Very concise and to the point!!

I use Jaaxy and I think it’s the best Keyword research tool on the market. I also use it to check how my competitors are doing.

Using this tool can definitely save you from writing content which will not rank well or that internet users are not searching for – the traffic light system is useful as you can see at a glance which keywords you should avoid or use.
I like the idea that it also suggests other related words which you can utilize in your research.

A great tool which everyone who wants to drive traffic to their website should have in their toolbox.

    1. Thanks for the comment, Jacqueline.

I agree that Jaaxy is the best tool out there. I have found others that might be comparable, but nothing that offers FREE searches, and they are all considerably more expensive than Jaaxy. If you want a keyword tool that you can easily see the results (love the red, yellow, and green indicators), Jaaxy is it.

  3. Hello,
I have started blogging myself. I am trying to find out the basic problems that my blog is having and looking for solutions. Also, I’m searching for some basic things like themes and other stuff.
I have read your whole article, I am looking forward to getting a positive result after performing this myself.
Can you suggest me any basic idea that I might need in the future as a new blogger?
    Thank you

    1. Thanks for the comment, Jamie.

A good theme is great, and it should be a good fit for your content, but initially, the main thing you should focus on is content. Post good, informative, interesting content, and post it often. There is really no substitute for that. Also, I would try to include as part of your title for each post a good, low competition keyword, but also add something to make the title more interesting so that it grabs the reader and they want to continue reading. Jaaxy can help you with finding keywords, and you can try it for free.

      Hope this helps.
